Shoes Like Pottery is part of MoonStar which was founded in 1873 in Kurume, Japan, and started as a producer of the Jika-Tabi (traditional Japanese shoes). The characteristic of Shoes Like Pottery is the unique vulcanization process (ka-ryu process in Japanese) that is only performed by a select group of manufacturers around the world. The shoes are baked in an oven at 120°C for 70 minutes, similar to the way Japanese pottery is baked. The pressure and heat causes a chemical reaction of the sulphur in the raw rubber, which returns the rubber to its original shape. This unique ka-ryu process ensures that small batches of the world's best vulcanised shoes can be made by hand.
